Minnesota After Roe v. Wade

How does the overturn of Roe v. Wade affect access to abortions in Minnesota?

How Does the Overturn of Roe v. Wade Affect Access to Abortions in Minnesota?

In June of 2022, the United States Supreme Court ruled to reverse the decision on Roe v. Wade. In place since 1973, Roe v. Wade was a Supreme Court legal case ruling that protected abortion as a constitutional right.  This year, the Supreme Court decided that abortion would no longer be considered a right granted by the constitution. The overturn of Roe v. Wade means that abortion is no longer federally protected. The rules surrounding abortion will now rest largely in the hands of each individual state. Understandably, you may have questions about what the Roe v. Wade overturn means for access to abortions in Minnesota. If so, you’re not alone. You may wonder, is abortion still legal in Minnesota?  It’s normal to have questions and fears about your options after the Supreme Court ruling, especially if you’re experiencing an unexpected pregnancy.

Abortions in Minnesota

Although abortion is no longer constitutionally protected, there are Minnesota laws that protect abortion. Abortion is still legal in Minnesota and protected by the Minnesota constitution despite the overturn of Roe v. Wade.  For instance, abortion rights have not changed for Minnesotans who experience an ectopic pregnancy, require abortion for miscarriage management, or choose to undergo an elective abortion.  What Minnesota’s abortion laws mean for surrounding states is that higher volumes of clients from other states may seek abortion care in Minnesota if abortion is illegal in their home state.

How Pregnancy Choices is Responding to the Overturn of Roe v. Wade

At Pregnancy Choices, our main goal is to support you in your pregnancy decisions. Our services have not changed since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. We remain committed to partnering with women and men at a decision point in their pregnancy, and providing practical support that helps our community thrive.  Pregnancy Choices is not an abortion clinic, and we do not provide nor refer abortions. However, we understand how overwhelming and scary an unexpected pregnancy can be, and we want to support you in whatever you decide.  We value transparency. We’re here to provide resources and information to women and men experiencing an unexpected pregnancy. We do this by providing FREE pregnancy tests, optional limited ultrasounds,  certified coaching, and the Minnesota Department of Health’s “If You Are Pregnant: Information on Fetal Development, Abortion, and Resources” booklet to each client. As a non-profit organization, we do not financially benefit from a woman’s reproductive choices. We do not advise women on what they should do regarding their unexpected pregnancy, either. Our goal is to empower you to seek out care and services that align with your values. We can connect you with resources for understanding your options in a nonjudgmental space. If you think you may be pregnant or have additional questions, you can call our clinic or schedule an appointment online.
